What is Gift of Literacy?Gift of Literacy is an annual award-winning program that encourages a love of reading among young children.
Through rich community partnerships and generous donors, every first-grader in our area participates in an enriching six-month literacy program.

The Rotary Clubs of Coos Bay, North Bend, Reedsport, Bandon, Coquille and Myrtle Point along with South Coast ESD, and Southwestern Oregon Community College are partnering to give children on the South Coast excitement and love of reading with the Gift of Literacy Project.

This well-established, time-tested, award-winning program encourages a love of reading among young children. Through a multi-club Rotary District Grant matched by local clubs, every first-grader in each of the club’s coastal communities participate in an enriching six-month literacy program.

The Gift of Literacy Program will culminate in a festive celebration on May 2, 2018, at Southwestern Oregon Community College, when more than 450 first-graders from the South Coast will be transported by bus to the college to an energetic and interactive assembly where they will receive a cinch bag filled with fun swag … and a brand new book!

The six selected books, chosen by Coos County librarians and educators, are a wonderful and diverse mix. Each first-grade classroom receives a set of the book. Teachers or guest readers will read the books in the classroom after they are received. Then each first-grade student will be able to choose his or her favorite title among the six books, and will receive a hardbound copy at the May 2 Gift of Literacy celebration.

The next Gift of Literacy celebration will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at Lane Community College.
